Inserting Beams into a Party Wall

A party wall agreement is required when cutting into a party wall for the insertion of steel beam/s because it ensures that the rights and interests of both parties are protected. The steel beams are load-bearing elements with heavy points loading onto the structure where it meets. Providing a structural engineer has completed structural calculations for the proposed structural design and an assessment of the wall itself then the party wall ‘should’ be OK. The contractor will be responsible for the cutting into the party wall to make a pocket to allow the steel beams to sit as well as the steel spreader plate or padstone.

The agreement sets out the rights and responsibilities of each party, as well as the methodology and procedures for carrying out the work.
